.Pre-Speaking Tips
1. Structure Your Response ✔ Social Opening (10 sec): "Hey [Name], you won’t believe what I’m seeing right now!" ✔ Background (10 sec): "I’m at Sunset Beach, and there’s this surreal fishing scene..." ✔ Description (30 sec): Focus on:
✔ Similes/Analogies: "The boat reminds me of a floating bathtub!" ✔ Textures/Colors: "The net is thick and tangled, with shiny fish scales glinting under the sunset." ✔ Measurements: "The boat is tiny, barely fitting two people." 3. Avoid Over-Describing ✖ Don’t list every detail—pick the most unusual 3-4 elements. CELPIP Speaking Task 8: Describing an Unusual Situation Preparation: 30 seconds | Recording: 60 seconds Task Prompt "You’re at a beach and see an unusual fishing scene. Call your friend and describe what’s happening in detail. Explain why it’s strange and invite your friend to join you."
.Model Answer (~200 words / 60 seconds)
"Hey Sam! I’m at the beach right now, and you’ve got to hear about this crazy fishing scene. It’s sunset—the sky is blood-red, and the water’s glowing—but what’s wild is this tiny, perfectly round boat, like a giant cereal bowl just sitting on the shore! Two people in pointed straw hats (maybe Vietnamese fishermen?) are standing on it, hauling in a massive net. The boat’s so small, I’m shocked it doesn’t tip over! Next to them, three more people are dragging the net onto the sand. One guy’s waist-deep in the waves, lifting the end like he’s holding up a heavy blanket. And the net—it’s packed with fish, maybe even octopuses! Everything’s glittering under the sunset light. I’ve never seen anything like it. The boat looks like it escaped from a cartoon. It looks homemade, and the whole thing feels like it’s from another century. Are you free to come down? We could check it out - maybe buy some super-fresh seafood for dinner. What do you think? If you’re into this, hurry—the fishermen might leave soon!" "Post-Speaking Assessment & Reflection Self-Checklist ✔ Did I greet and set the scene naturally? ✔ Did I highlight 3-4 unusual details (boat, net, hats, sunset)? ✔ Did I use vivid descriptions (similes, textures, colors)? ✔ Did I explain why it’s strange and invite action? ✔ Was my tone conversational (not robotic)?
