Transcript of "The Burnt Report" (~300 words, 5 exchanges)
Rachel: "Hey, you look terrible—dark circles, shaky hands. What’s going on?" Jake: "Ugh, don’t ask. I’ve been up since 3 AM. My cat knocked over a candle last night, and my final report got literally burnt to a crisp." Rachel: "No way! Couldn’t you salvage it? I’ve got a scanner if you need—" Jake: "The edges are readable, but the key graphs are ash. My boss needs it by noon, and rewriting it means redoing all the data analysis. I’m toast." Rachel: "Why not ask for an extension? You’ve got photos of the damage, right?" Jake: "I would, but get this: my boss is presenting our work to investors today. If I bail, the whole team looks bad. Plus, I’m up for promotion next month..." Rachel: "What’s your husband doing? Can’t he help?" Jake: "He’s trying—took the kids to his mom’s so I can focus. But he’s got his own deadline, so all he can do is keep the chaos away." Rachel: "Well, coffee’s on me. And hey, at least the cat’s cute?" Jake: "[Scoffs] Tell that to my career. But thanks—I’ll need gallons to survive this." Questions
Post-Listening Assessment Self-Checklist ✔ Did I identify the core problem (burnt report) in the first exchange? ✔ Did I note key reasons (boss’s presentation, promotion)? ✔ Did I ignore red herrings (cat, coffee)? #1 Trap: "Boss" and "overtime" are mentioned but irrelevant. #2 Trap: "Amused" might tempt from the cat joke, but tone is stressed. #3 Trap: "Photos" are mentioned but not the reason. #4 Trap: "Redoing" mimics the report issue but is incorrect. #5 Trap: Requires inferring from "promotion" context. ✔ Did I track tone shifts (exhausted → resigned)?
