What is IELTS?

About the IELTS Test

The IELTS is an English proficiency test created by Cambridge and managed by organizations like the British Council and IDP. For accurate details, check the official IELTS website or Wikipedia.

Two IELTS Versions:
  1. Academic Module – For university/college admission.
  2. General Module – For immigration (PR or citizenship).
While many Canadian schools accept IELTS, some now waive the requirement.

Key Features of IELTS:
  • Includes a face-to-face speaking test (unlike TOEFL or CELPIP).
  • More test dates in Ottawa than TOEFL or CELPIP.
  • Higher cost than most standardized tests.

Which test do I take - General or Academic?

If you are applying for citizenship, Permanent Residence or some specific occupation, you are usually required to take the General Module.

If you are applying to enter university, college or certain training courses, you are normally required to take the academic course.

What is the difference between General and Academic modules?

Speaking & Listening
  • Same for both modules – No difference in difficulty or format.
Reading Section
  • General Training:
    • First 2 passages test quick understanding of everyday texts (ads, brochures, manuals).
  • Academic:
    • 3 passages with more complex, university-style texts.
Writing Section
  • General Training Task 1: Write an email (e.g., request, complaint).
  • Academic Task 1: Summarize a graph, chart, or diagram.

Difficulty: While the Academic module is generally harder, both can be challenging depending on your strengths.

What are the IELTS parts?

IELTS Test Structure (Academic & General Training)

All modules completed in one session (order): Listening → Reading → Writing → Speaking

1. Listening (Same for both modules)
  • 30 minutes, 40 questions
  • 4 sections (10 questions each) with increasing difficulty:
    1. Everyday social conversation (forms, short answers)
    2. Social context speech (maps, diagrams)
    3. Educational discussion (multiple choice)
    4. Academic lecture (note completion)
2. Reading (Different for Academic/General)
  • 1 hour, 40 questions
Academic:
  • 3 long academic texts (journal articles, research)
  • Question types: True/False/Not Given, matching headings, diagrams
General Training:
  • Section 1: 2-3 short practical texts (ads, notices)
  • Section 2: Workplace documents (job descriptions, manuals)
  • Section 3: 1 long general interest article
3. Writing (Different tasks)
  • 1 hour, 2 tasks
Academic:
  • Task 1: Describe visual data (graph/chart/diagram) - 20 min
  • Task 2: Essay (discuss opinion/viewpoint) - 40 min
General Training:
  • Task 1: Write a letter (formal/semi-formal) - 20 min
  • Task 2: Essay (similar to Academic) - 40 min
4. Speaking (Same for both)
  • 11-14 minutes, face-to-face
  • Part 1: Introduction & everyday topics (4-5 min)
  • Part 2: Talk on given topic (1-2 min prep + speech)
  • Part 3: Discussion of abstract ideas (4-5 min)
Key Notes:
  • Listening/Reading answers are written on the question paper then transferred
  • No breaks between first three tests
  • Speaking may be on same day or different day

How is the Computer Based Test (CBT) IELTS Different From the Paper Based Test (PBT)?

Computer-Based IELTS (CBT) vs Paper-Based (PBT)
Same Test, Different Format:
  • Same content, questions, structure, and scoring
  • Speaking test remains face-to-face with an examiner
  • You still get rough paper for notes
  • Can navigate between questions freely
  • No spell check in any section
Key Differences:
  1. More test dates available
    • Faster results (3-5 days)
    • Smaller test groups
  2. No answer sheet errors
    • Answers entered directly on computer
    • No risk of mistakes when transferring answers
  3. Listening Section Changes
    • No 10-minute transfer time (PBT)
    • Instead:
      • Short review time after each section
      • 2 minutes final check at the end
    • Total time: 30-34 minutes
    • No example question at start
  4. Equipment
    • Uses headphones for listening
Good to Know:
  • Reading/Writing sections keep same timing as PBT
  • Results are equally valid

Taking the Online Test

IELTS Online (At-Home Academic Test) IDP now offers an online IELTS Academic test in Canada, similar to Duolingo’s at-home format. Below are key details—for full rules, visit the official IDP website.
Important Notes:
  1. Academic Module only – Not available for General Training.
  2. Technical requirements – Check your device and internet connection beforehand.
  3. Speaking test – Conducted via live video call with an examiner.
  4. Strict rules – You cannot look away from the screen, or you risk disqualification.

How is IELTS scored?

 A clear chart is provided at examenglish.com.The IELTS is scored from 1-9 band score. Check out the official website and Wikipedia as well. Notice that there are slight differences in the listening and reading scores and that there are fairly big differences between the General and Academic reading.
