Pre-reading strategies
1. Suprasegmental Strategies (Paragraph-Level)
A. Paragraph Rhythm & Stress:

• Content Words: Stress key nouns/verbs/adjectives (memories, illustrations, imagination, magic).
• Function Words: Reduce speed for articles/prepositions (of, as, to, the).
• Clause Pauses: Pause briefly at commas/clause boundaries (e.g., "as young readers [pause] Colourful illustrations...").

B. Intonation Patterns:

• Statements: Gradual rise on new ideas, drop to conclude:
  "Tales of magic and myth [rise] carried us away to other worlds [drop]."
• Contrasts: Emphasize opposing ideas (e.g., "childhood imagination [rise] vs. adult eye [drop]").
• Lists: Slight rise on each item, drop after final:
  "Colours may seem too bright [rise], words too large [drop]."

C. Linking & Blending (Natural Flow):

• Merge weak syllables: "to the eye" → /təði aɪ/.
• Glottal stops for pauses: "myth carried" → /mɪθˈkærid/.

2. Phonetic Strategies (PTE-Focused)
A. Problem Sounds in Paragraphs:

• /θ/ vs. /ð/: "myth carried" (avoid /mɪs/).
• Vowel Length: "bright" (/aɪ/ long) vs. "myth" (/ɪ/ short).
• Silent Letters: "captured" (/ˈkæpʧərd/, not "cap-tur-ed").

B. Tongue Twisters for Warm-Up:

• "Thin myths thrill the imaginative thinker." (targets /θ/, /ɪ/, /ð/).

3. Model Paragraph Practice
Text:
"Many adults have clear memories of stories and books encountered as young readers. Assessment Checklist:
      Stress: Did you emphasize memories, illustrations, magic, bright, large?
      Pauses: Breaths after readers / imagination / worlds / however / example?
      Intonation: Rise on "other worlds", drop on "overly simple"?
      Blending: Smooth links like "books encountered" (/bʊksɪnˈkaʊntərd/)?
Reflection:

• "I stressed 'captured' and 'myth' well but rushed 'to the eye of an adult'—needs smoother blending."
• "Paused correctly after 'however' but forgot to drop tone on 'simple'."

4. Pre-Test Warm-Up Routine (PTE Edition)

1. 2 mins Suprasegmentals: Read the model paragraph above, focusing on clause pauses and stress.
2. 2 mins Phonetics: Drill /θ/ and /ð/ with "The thoughtful author wrote those myths".
3. 1 min Pacing: Practice the full paragraph within 40 seconds (natural speed > speed-reading).
