SSAT Tutor
Many parents find it actually more economical to have their children study SSAT at home, with a tailor-made program, since it is more focused and therefore more efficient. For those outside of Ottawa, online tutorials are offered using the share screen and a rigorous program using SSAT practice tests. Please see the course page for details.
We are now accepting students starting on September, 1st 2015. SSAT lessons are 2 hours at $60/hr or $120/lesson ($15 for each additional student) and every program involves a free consultation at the beginning to determine needs and level. After the first class, 4 subsequent classes must be paid in advance.
If you are interested in studying it in the comfort of your home, with a customized program, please check for availability. There you can select a time to study at your convenience.
Before Calling for a Consultation....
We are happy to offer free consultations at your home or another convenient location. However, please consider the following points before scheduling a meeting:
1. Time Availability
After-school hours are often fully booked, so after-dinner sessions (e.g., 7:00 pm or later) may be more practical. Ensure your child has a consistent time slot available, factoring in extracurricular activities like sports or clubs that might conflict with tutoring.
2. Purpose of Tutoring
If your child has significant ESL (English as a Second Language) needs, a tutor alone may not be enough to secure admission to a prestigious private school. In such cases, consider focusing on improving their English skills before tackling the SSAT.
3. Assess Your Child’s Level
Have your child take a practice test to identify their strengths and weaknesses in English, math, and reading. This will help you and the tutor create a targeted study plan. You might be surprised to find that their perceived weaknesses are actually strengths, or vice versa.
4. Understand the Test
Before starting tutoring, familiarize yourself and your child with the SSAT format, rules, and scoring system. Use free online practice tests to avoid wasting time and money on basic explanations during tutoring sessions. Focus instead on improving skills and strategies.
5. Is Your Child Motivated?
If your child is not enthusiastic about changing schools, motivating them to study for the SSAT can be challenging. Let the tutor know if this is the case so they can adjust their approach to keep your child engaged.
By addressing these points beforehand, you can ensure a smoother and more effective tutoring experience for your child.
