TPS - Understanding the CAT 4 & CAT 5 Exam
CAT5 is the standard examination for those entering an IB program at a private school in Ottawa. Before 2020, it was also an entrance exam for prospective IB applicant students in public schools Merrivale and Colonel By.
Although there is also a test with student response question (non-multiple choice), currently IB programs are using the multiple choice formats and it is compressed.
It is very difficult to get any preparation material for CAT4/5. If you are a home-schooling parent you may order practice material for your child. CAT4/5 practice tests to schools, school boards, homeschooling parents, and other educational institutions only and the practice tests help students become familiar with the format of the CAT tests.
We offer tutoring based on a combination of other standardized tests that are similar. CAT4/5 tutoring is a combination of SSAT, OSSLT and PSAT at the level of grade 8. In terms of level for ordering material this would be level 17 and/or 18 for levels.
The below structure is for the whole test. Some CAT 5 tests in certain schools, such as the one at Ashbury College, are reduced exams so the program would be adjusted.

At Level 18 and 19 the following structure exists
The total time is 230 minutes = 3 hours and 50 minutes
Reading = 60 minutes @ 48 questions
Vocabulary = 25 minutes @ 40 questions
Writing Conventions = 35 minutes @ 40 questions
Spelling = 15 minute @ 30 questions
Mathematics = 60 minutes @ 60 questions
Computational Estimates = 35 minutes @ 36 quesions

Tutoring

Tutoring in CAT4/5 is only offered at the grade 8 and 9 level and only in the Ottawa regions. We can offer it online but it is advisable to do it one on one in the home. There are no slides offered with this program but a comprehensive homework program is provided.
