TPS - English Practice in Listening & Reading
Websites for Listening
- For listening sites, I am only recommending sites that target
- Intermediate to advanced level students. It is not that I value this level range more - it's just these are the students at the high school and college level
- Academic listening in lectures, speeches, news stories, stories or dialogues between students and teachersentic
- Authentic style listening as opposed to textbook style artificial listening
- Active listening so that students are doing tasks while listening or immediately after
- Learners who want listening for free so there is no fees. Some ask you to register but do not ask for credit cards
Breaking News: I
This site targets intermediate to Advanced students with news stories and exercises, organized by recent addition and by theme
BBC Learn English:
A good site to use the search term and get specific targeting listening topics and exercises
ESL Radio and TV
This is an Australian site that is arranged by topic and is leveled
UEFAP
This is a site that teaches you how to listen and take notes
Randall's ESL Cyber Listening Lab:
Has pre-listening exercises and a post listening quiz. Many interesting topics
ELLLO - English Listening Lab Online. A lot of these are dialogues with topic discussions but they give a good vocabulary review. I would use the quizzes as you are listening. The advanced listening seems more like upper intermediate so don't be afraid to start at the highest level first
Randall's Lab -
Gives the full cycle of pre-listening, while listening and after-listening exercises
ESL Fast
The thing I think is most useful are the stories and audio essays
English Central -s
You can stop the listening and get vocabulary help.
ESL Commando
has a number of listening activities designed to provoke critical and reflective thinking
Websites for Reading
I have chosen reading sites that:
UNSW – Reading Effectively
For those entering college or university and wondering how to read. This is not a site for reading practice - it is a series of tips and guidelines for handling tough reading in a post secondary course
University of Victoria Study Zone
I mainly like its advance level pulp fiction section
Using English.com
Leveled short passages with comprehension exercises
English Club
Contains a section of reading practice passages with vocabulary lists, exercises and quizzes
ESL Bits
Gives a range of reading skills and passages to practice with. This is a good one for test preparation
ESL GOLD
An English for Academic Purposes (EAP) site with short passages and skill development
ESL Independent Study lab
This is more like a data base of reading comprehension from around the internet but it has it in very precise levels
- Guide you to read or give readings with excercise that build skills
- Tend to be oriented towards hish school to college students
- Are academic
- Free

Youtube for Listening
ESL Listening videos are numerous and it is worthwhile to bear in mind that many of them are from learning centers and language schools hoping to promote themselves and they are more often quite bad . However, there are also some very good ones that are professional. The following is a carefully selected list:
Learn English through Story by Doris Cashion
What better way to learn than through some of the best stories written simplified according to level
JenniferESL
One of the few real teacher you-tubers who uses targeted dialogues and is careful about making her videos professionally and patiently put together
English For Everyone
Series of listening sites based on a textbook of listening passages with exercises
Daily Listening
A site with a range of topics for advanced students that allows a student abut 10 minutes a day.
Misterduncan
A well put together series of topics with the idea of putting a bit of humour and fun into learning without being too silly
Learn English Conversation
For dialogues but has a nice after the scene explantion of many expressions used

Youtube for Reading
It is probably not the best place for reading material but here are a few
Accuplacer
Emphasizes reading skills and explains strategies to use
English with Jennifer
There is also a series of videos on reading skills as well as the many other videos related to English learning
JamesESL
I thouhgt this video he gives on reading skills was well done
Iris Reading
Gives a good presentation on how to focus on previewing main ideas quickly
I would strongly advise you to look at any of the free audio-books online websites - just do a search on google. This way you can half read a book and half listen to it.
