How Long Should a Program Last?
The frequency and duration of TPS courses can vary greatly. One of the benefits of having a tutor rather than taking group classes is that you will be able to save time and take fewer classes. The goal is to make you independent so that you can take over the learning process yourself.
Most tutorial courses at TPS are not long. One of the problems with group classes is that they require lengthy time commitments that might be better spent through self study. Will I Receive an Assessment?
All programs will begin with a free needs assessment to determine the student's needs, skills level, program content, and schedule. This is a good way for the tutor to communicate their expectations. This short session should take about 15-30 minutes. Next, the tutor will recommend a program for your approval.
The following outline gives the student some information about the typical parts of the various tests. A much more detailed course outline should follow after the tutor meets with the student. For more information on what is offered, see our page on tutor services.

Self-Study
The tutorial should NEVER replace your self-study program. It is important that you put in even more self-study time than before. In fact, one big reason for getting a tutor is so that you can self-study in the most efficient and effective way. Communicate the self-study program to your tutor, and make sure that this is time that is not sacrificed for anything other than emergencies.
Homework Policy
All homework completed during the tutorial program will be marked, including essays. If you write it, we will mark it - the more, the merrier. If the tutorial ends, the tutor will continue marking your homework for a week after your program ceases. When submitting homework, make sure you follow these steps:
1. Send an email identifying yourself and stating the due date of the homework. Do not send the homework in an attachment. Put it in the main message. You may send scanned in visuals (Task 1 Writing in IELTS) and attach these. The reason for this is that a tutor may not be able to open the attachments (a tutor may wish to correct homework on his/her mobile phone).
2. Send a text message to the tutor saying that you have sent the homework. The tutor should respond that he/she has received it.
3. When you receive the corrected homework, send a text message to the tutor to inform him/her that you have received it.

Can I combine courses? (Eg IELTS and English 12)
Many students wish to study for more than one test at a time (for example, Provincial Exam and IELTS, or SAT and TOEFL). Classes for each course must be on separate days. We advise students to allow plenty of time for either of their tests.
What slides are given?

Slides are put onto all students desktops and are used for strategies, skill building and important topics.

All tutors will give you slides for you to review so that you do not have to take notes during the lecture.
Please note that these will include not only study points, but also a range of practice questions. We have revised these slides over many years for new and updated types of questions. |
