The purpose of this site is simply to centralize and briefly summarize the most important information for Montreal test takers need with regards to:

Booking Information

The centres set their times and dates, although they must follow so you will see some differences. There are 5 centers (4 British Council test centres and 1 IDP center). The booking information for British council is here and IDP booking information is here Tests do book up quickly so be aware of the registration procedures for booking in advance. If you cannot get the time you want, have a look at the various open dates in Ottawa, Quebec City or Sherbrooke. Many test takers play things safe by booking two dates (in case they pass) but please consult cancellation policies realize that when you book tests only 3 weeks apart from each other, your chance of improving drastically is small and there is even a chance that your score could even go down.

The procedure leading up to the IDP IELTS exam (offered at Canada College) involve 5 steps. The steps for IDP registration are similar to British Council registration

General Time Needed for the Exam

Test Day Schedule

The four tests together take 2 hours 44 minutes.
Added onto this time is

A 45-minute welcome period,

Explanations of instructions.

In general, you should allow for half a day for the Listening, Reading, and Writing tests. The Speaking test is held in a private session in front of a certified examiner and can last from 11 to 14 minutes. This test is usually scheduled in the morning (or in the afternoon if the Listening, Reading, and Writing tests are held in the morning), but could also be held on another date.

Special Information on IELTS British Council Rules

You need to bring the Confirmation of completion of IELTS registration and acceptance of application (sent by email by the test centre that you booked)

Arrive on time or you may be refused. Do not assume that just because the first part is a welcome that you cannot be refused if late.
Bring your permanent resident card or the passport you used to make your reservation when you arrive. It must be the same one you used to register
British Council will take your fingerprint ) and a passport photo to issue your Test Report Form (TRF).
If you are under age a parental consent form must be completed and signed by a parent/legal guardian.
No electronic devices: phones, watches, headphones, food etc. are allowed in the exam room.
You can take in eyeglasses and and an unlabeled clear water bottle
Special disability accommodation must be preceded by an email at least six (6) weeks before the test date .

Special Information on IELTS IDP (Canada College) Rules

Bring your passport or Permanent Resident Card, used in registration for listening,reading and writing session as well as the speaking session.
IELTS test centre will take your photo when you register.. Don’t bring passport photos
You can bring HB pencils but not not mechanical ones for paper test but for the computer test it will be provided.
Erasers are allowed for the paper based test.
You can bring a mobile phone, but must shut it off and put it in a special area. The test supervisor will tell you where
Electronic items are not allowed in the test room
Children or family members cannot enter, even for emergencies.
Food is not allowed in the examination room. Only unlabeled clear water bottles.

Refund & Cancellation Policies

British Council (Canada) posts the following refund and cancellation policies

More than 14 days prior to the day of the test, - 75% refund of the total test fee. You my also change test date (only once) but no more than 3 months after original date
Within 14 days, but more than 5 days prior to the day of the test - 50% of the full test fee. You cannot change test dates
Five days or less prior to the day of the test: no refund
You may make a case for exceptional circumstances such as medical conditions (need certificate), bereavement, military service
If test center cancels you will be refunded, rescheduled and some compensatory expenses may be given if very short notice.

IDP (Canada) has communicated the following refund and cancellation policies

More than five (5) weeks before the test date, you will receive a refund minus an administration charge.
Within five (5) weeks of the test date, you will be charged the full fee unless you have a serious medical reason (meidcal certificate receives refund minus admin fee).
If you communicate to the center any uncontrollable difficulty on test day, you may be rescheduled

How Much Does the IELTS Exam Cost?

The IELTS test generally costs a whopping amount and you will need to pay the two sales taxes in Quebec in addition (5% GST + 9.9975% QST) . The Paper Based and Computer Based tests are the same rate. The following is a ranked comparison from most expensive to cheapest in Montreal with the most expensive as Concordia and the cheapest at ILSC & Canada College.. Please let us know if and when these rates change and we have not updated them.
