Structure
The best way to understand this test is to look at the time schedule of events. I have simplified this from the official Manitoba Education Site
Day 1
For 2.5 hours (or more if requested) students do the following
Day 2
For one hour the following will be completed
Day 3
For one hour, the student will do the following
Day 4
For one hour, but can be extended
Look closely at the appendix section of the Grade 12 English Language Arts Standards Test Information Bulletin as it shows good examples in real form of what students actually write a long the way.
Day 1
For 2.5 hours (or more if requested) students do the following
- Explore the Topic - teacher led
- Get in groups to discuss the topic for about 20 minutes (Define topic, connect it, review topic and consider it)
- Read texts (short story, article, poem & visual text) and responding to Text (1. Explain, analyze, evaluate 2. Support responses with examples & own experience)
- Preview the writing task
Day 2
For one hour the following will be completed
- Planning and Developing a Text
- Planning Your Writing Variables (Form, Purpose, Central Idea, Audience and Context)
- Brainstorming for Ideas (writing them on a page)
- Drafting (Writing the first draft)
Day 3
For one hour, the student will do the following
- Developing a Text
- Revising and Editing
Day 4
For one hour, but can be extended
- Explaining Your Writing Variables [Explaining in written form how variables fit together to make an effective plan]
- Writing the Final Copy and Proofreading
