Quebec Secondary English Language Arts (SELA) III (grades 9, 10 & 11) Cycle 2
The ESL Core and Enriched
In Quebec there are different systems for the French schools and English Schools when it comes to Secondary English Language Arts Cycle 2 (SELA2).
If a secondary student speaks French and is between beginner to Intermediate levels in English, the student would most likely be placed in the Cycle 1 (grades 7 & 8) Core ESL program or the Cycle 2 (Grades 9, 10, & 11) Core ESL program. By the end of it, students are expected to be able to "communicate in English in order to meet their needs and pursue their interests in a rapidly evolving global society." as stated in the official Quebec government website on ESL education It tends to have more functional, communicative aims so that students "realize the importance of learning English for their future plans–personal, academic and professional." It mentions that it follows a social constructive, communicative and strategy based approach, maximizing opportunities to share knowledge. The Core ESL program also structures itself in 3 competencies Competency 1 Interacts orally in English Competency 2 Reinvests understanding of texts Competency 3 Writes and produces texts There is a provincial exam (ministerial exam) in the Core ESL program If a student is upper Intermediate to Advanced level in English he or she would likely enter the Enriched English program that has what is termed as 3 processes 1. The response process 2. The writing process 3. The production process The response process involves learning text components, features, details and messages; responding to guiding questions, responding personally and generalizing beyond; doing self and peer evaluations The writing process involves the preparation steps, drafting, revising, editing, publishing and reflecting. The production process entails preparing, brainstorming, researching, selecting a medium, choosing language, outlining. In the creation phase students then concentrate on creating, selecting and choosing conventions, revising, finalizing and reflecting The Secondary Cycle Two Core ESL program builds on what students learned in the Elementary and the Secondary Cycle One ESL programs. All these programs are based on the "social constructivist" theory of learning, the "communicative approach", strategy-based learning, and cooperative learning. While both systems use the Cycle 1 and 2 systems, and Secondary English covers grades 9-11 (cycle 2) or what is typically called Secondary 3,4,5, the English programs in French schools are assuming most students' second language is English and therefore hold off literature and writing convention analysis unless a student reaches Enriched English level. Secondary English Language Arts for Cycle Two (SELA2) Grades 9,10 & 11 (Secondary 3,4,5) in an Quebec English School
The SELA program at Quebec English Schools is quite different from a porgram in Ontario and BC, but similar to Manitoba.
Secondary III classes in are structured around the variety of ways to read and respond to different literary forms using the Immersion Into Text method of approaching texts - the method applied in Quebec high schools. Most teachers will stress the importance of critical thinking analysis while reading, but they will also stress the various ways to read a poem/short story/ article or essay for such elements as imagery, symbolism, mood/ tone, irony, point of view and structure. In addition, students are trained to write expository essays and develop deeper narrative techniques in their compositions. Finally literary tools and devices are learned and students are trained to apply them in this analysis. The main feature of the SELA2 program is the way that students approach literary texts. In Ontario and BC, students are expected to be detached, objective analysts of author's methods in a text or other form, and the effect they can have on readers. In Quebec the focus is more on the reader's personal response to the writing, also analyzing the conventions but determining how they affect the student context and wider contexts. The writing is more mixed with subjective and objective tones In many ways, English 9, 10 and 11 are similar, but more is demanded from students each year. For example, an essay in grade 11 (Secondary 5) would expect to be more comprehensive, include more convention analysis and be professionally done than one in grade 10. The reading material would also be more challenging Find a English Tutor for English 10,11,& 12There are a number of tutors who will help you with your skills but at TPS we combine our knowledge of second language learners and their specific challenges when approaching it.
