Information on taking the IELTS exam in Edmonton and the path for finding a tutor or self-studying IELTS.
Edmonton
Alberta |
In the outer Edmonton areas, studying and taking the IELTS test is not a real problem. There are learning centers outside Edmonton and four places to take the test (British Council, IDP, Saskatchawen College -Edmonton and Canada College. Self-study materials for IELTS are abundant. However, the wisest approach is to take group classes and self-study with tutorials to get more intensive and tailor-made training and feedback.
Issues to Consider
A number of issues come up about the test that need to be considered:
1) It is not the only option in many cases. For example, both U. of Alberta and U. of Calgary have the option of taking the TOEFL, CAEL, Duolingo, and PTE.
2) Although IELTS is one of the easiest standardized tests to register at in the Edmonton area and has more available dates than other tests, this can also be its disadvantage as well. When you can register for it that easily it also means you may be tempted to take it before you have adequately prepared for it or repeatedly taking it every 3 weeks and making a substantial donation to the testing center and Cambridge.
3) Much of the test involves the use of analysis, critical reading, listening, forming and supporting opinions. This means that you may need to develop some background knowledge and critical thinking in unfamiliar areas.
4) Self-study is easier with reading and listening as there are resources available. However, trying to self-study IELTS for speaking and writing is challenging since you need feedback.

If one goes to the public library site under ELL resources, you can see a list of ELL providers and some of these institutions also provide IELTS group classes. but you may find it more time efficient to get a home tutor. Language schools offer programs at their own schedule convenience but it is always good to get as much instruction as you can, given your time and resource constraints.
