The great thing about CELBAN is that it is very relevant to the nursing profession and in that sense a better measure of your English for nursing than IELTS. The disadvantage is that there are few courses and tutors for CELBAN.
There several purposes for taking the CELBAN course
There several purposes for taking the CELBAN course
- Fear of IELTS. If you have to take and English proficiency exam and are not enthusiastic about the IELTS, CELBAN is a great alternative, if you manage to get a booking.
- Relevance. You have decided the CELBAN is the fairest way to assess your English. CELBAN is very relevant to the nursing profession and so you may find it a fairer test of the English that is most important to you.
- Time Limitations. You have limited time for Self study and you are too busy for many classes. CELBAN does not require as much self-study. The main thing is understanding the parts and what to expect. The types of tasks should be what you already experienced in your training.Chances are that you have booked the CELBAN well in advance so taking it once a week gives you plenty of time before
Issues to Consider
Because there is typically a choice between CELBAN and IELTS, a few issues should be considered:
1. Do I have any experience with IELTS already?
If you have already taken IELTS before or studied it intensively, then you may consider taking it instead of CELBAN.
2. Do I feel I have better functional English in Nursing than in general English?
If you feel that you can perform English better when doing nursing functions, you would probably better off taking CELBAN
3. What is my time line?
CELBAN fills up very quickly and there is only one testing center (see below under Test Dates and Locations). If you can book in early it is a great option but if you need the test earlier, consider IELTS
4. What is my budget?
CELBAN is a more expensive than IELTS at $375 across Canada (no GST)

We are currently enrolling students. CELBAN lessons are 2 hours at $60/hr or $120/lesson and involve a free consultation at the beginning to determine needs and level. A more extensive CELBAN test at the beginning can be arranged, however it will be billed according to the rate of a regular class. After the first class, 4 subsequent classes must be paid in advance.
Since there are few courses being offered for CELBAN at colleges and learning centers and those that are offered may not fit your schedule, TPS offer an alternative. We lessons in our home or at a public place like a library. CELBAN lessons are $60/hr and involve a free consultation at the beginning to determine needs and level.
CELBAN can be booked at any time between 8:00 am - 11:00 pm ET online but if booked as a tutorial check the following schedule.

CELBAN is often more fun to do with a group of nurses. You may opt to get a few colleagues together and this can reduce the expense. Each additional student is $15 so with 4 students you can get the cost down to about $24 a student,
