TPS - Finding a SSAT Tutor in Ottawa
Many parents find it actually more economical to have their children study SSAT at home, with a tailor-made program, since it is more focused and therefore more efficient. For those outside of Ottawa, online tutorials are offered using the share screen and a rigorous program using SSAT practice tests. Please see the course page for details.
We are now accepting students starting on September, 1st 2015. SSAT lessons are 2 hours at $60/hr or $120/lesson ($15 for each additional student) and every program involves a free consultation at the beginning to determine needs and level. After the first class, 4 subsequent classes must be paid in advance.
If you are interested in studying it in the comfort of your home, with a customized program, please check for availability. There you can select a time to study at your convenience.
Before Calling for a Consultation....
We are happy to meet with you at your home or outside for a free consultation. However, as Ottawa is a tough place for a tutor to move about from 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm, please consider the following issues before calling to set up a meeting.
1. Time availability of my child. Please be sure that there is an available time for your child and consider that after school times re often full so after dinner times might be easier
2. Purpose of Tutorials. If you are expecting a tutor to magically get your child into a prestigious private school when he or she has substantial ESL needs, you are looking at the wrong service.
3. Level of your child. Have him or her try a practice test and communicate what you think are the strengths and challenges in his or her English are.
How well do I actually know this test and my child?
It is hard to know this so it may be helpful to go through a practice test with your child to know what is demanded of a course. Remember you do not want to waste time and money having a tutor explain the test, rules and scoring system when you really just want your skills and strategies to improve. Do a few free sample SSAT sections or the whole test and find out your strengths and weaknesses after marking them. You might be surprised to learn that what you thought was your child's weakness may be his or her strength or vice versa..
2. Does he or she have available time?
Look at your potential times carefully and remember that other things will come up in your child's life. While it may seem ideal to do it after school, often your child may wish to stay back for clubs or sports. We want to be comfortable that the time you choose in one you will stick to and maintain.
3. Is your child on board with this?
Often children do not really want to change schools and the desire is primarily the wishes of the parents. In these case, motivating a child to work hard on SSAT will be extremely difficult and this information that is helpful for the tutor, so that he or she can modify his or her approach.
