Information on Taking the CELPIP exam in Calgary, why and thtaking CELPIP is becoming attrative compared to IELTS, and the path for finding a tutor or self-studying in the Calgary area.

If you live in Calgary, taking the test is possible and studying for CELPIP by taking classes is becoming easier, although choices are still limited compared to IELTS, since not many centers offer classes and those that do are often consultant organizations that charge a lot. At the same time, the option of taking the CELPIP test, which is already very popular in the west coast of Canada, is becoming a viable option for many prospective PR and Canadian immigrants in Calgary.

Why CELPIP is Becoming Attractive?

CELPIP is becoming an attractive option for the following reasons.

1. It is cheaper. Both versions (CELPIP General, CELPIP general L&S) are less expensive than IELTS.

2. For many, it seems more professional. It is a longer more comprehensive test that is progressive (each section gets harder).

3. Frustration with IELTS. IELTS tests often see band scores vary from test to test and some students feel dejected that there is no consistency in their scoring so they are eager to take a new test.

4. It fits many test takers that have specific problems such as with spelling or face to face communication

Home Tutoring

CELPIP can be comfortably studied in your own home with a program custom made between a tutor and student tailor-made program. Please look through the CELPIP tutor Calgary to see what dates and times are available.

Outside of the Home Tutoring

If you need classes outside of your home, TPS can arrange for private classes at public libraries or community centers. Give us a request and we’ll get things arranged.

Taking Classes

There are a number of centers that are conducting CELPIP classes often as part of their immigration consulting fees. There is a speaking preparation course offered by Paragon Testing called the CELPIP Speaking Pro Course for about $25/lesson for a 90 minute talk. It does not provide you with feedback and tends to take up a lot of time explaining the test or advising you in things you already know. It does give some idea of sample responses, and performance standards. Hopefully, in the future, more will start up a CELPIP program authorized by Paragon Testing but for now there is just the one as far as I know. If another does start please do not hesitate to let me know because I always feel tutorials are often facilitated nicely with group classes as long as the program does not stretch for too long.

Self-Study

Self-studying CELPIP is more difficult than many other standardized tests but Paragon Testng seems to have relaxed many of their previous restrictions on using practice tests and so there are growing number of resources both on my site and on external sites. Paragon provides details on its official website that now sells 5 sample tests. Even though they are a bit expensive, they are worthwhile investments since there is not much else to be found.

Test Taking

Calgary CELPIP exam locations, are on the TPS website or you can just browse through the Paragon official website that if you would prefer to go there directly. There are 3 testing centers in Calgary, namely the CFA Insittute, BITTS, and Precise Solutions and but it seems that only BITTS is currently actively holding the CELPIP.
